What is Dento Shitō-ryū?
Dento Shitō-ryū (伝統糸東流) means Traditional Shitō-ryū. It is the direct preservation of the karate system founded by Mabuni Kenwa (1889–1952), one of Okinawa’s great masters and the creator of Shitō-ryū Karate-dō.
Mabuni studied under two of the most influential Okinawan teachers:
Itosu Ankō of Shuri-te, known for fast, agile techniques.
Higaonna Kanryō of Naha-te, known for rooted stances and powerful breathing methods.
By combining these traditions, Mabuni created Shitō-ryū, one of the most comprehensive karate styles, often called the “encyclopedia of kata” for preserving more than 50 classical kata.

What Makes It Dento?
The word Dento (伝統) means traditional or handed down. In karate, this means practicing the art as Mabuni intended, with a focus on:
Kata preservation – teaching the complete kata system inherited from Okinawa.
Bunkai (applications) – studying the real fighting principles hidden in kata.
Balanced training – combining speed and agility with power and rooted strength.
Martial spirit – training for discipline, self-defense, and character development, not just sport competition.
